Why a broker? Why SVA?

By: Rich Alton, Managing Director of Strategic Veterinary Advisors

These are two critical questions every practice owner contemplating a sale will eventually have to answer. As the leader of Strategic Veterinary Advisors since its inception in 2017, I’d like to share my thoughts based on years of experience with our sophisticated clients.

Why a broker?

Through my years in the industry, I’ve built great relationships with the folks who find and evaluate deals at the veterinary consolidators. And what all of them have told me is this – as soon as they hear from a prospective seller that they’ve engaged a broker, their heart sinks.

Why? Because they know the practice will now command a much higher price than it otherwise would. At SVA, in situations where a client has received offers prior to hiring us, we have exceeded those offers by ~35% on average. This is multiples higher than our commission and is the part of our track record we are most proud of – providing tangible economic benefit to our clients.

My number one piece of advice to any prospective seller is: whatever you do, *hire a broker*. If the buyer on the other side of the table literally dreads something…that’s exactly what you should do.

Why SVA?

At Strategic Veterinary Advisors, we provide the highest quality, most personal level of service in the industry. Each deal receives the care and attention you would expect from a high-end investment bank. And from our earliest days, we have specialized in helping top tier clinics achieve market leading valuations.

But more than just valuation, we aim to place our clients with partners they will be happy with in the years following the closing. We place a heavy emphasis on finding the right fit and have a proven track record of clients who have achieved remarkable growth with their new partners.
